PROJECT TITLE: Engineering ω-transaminase (ω-TA) biocatalysts for the sustainable synthesis of chiral amines

Institution:
Manchester Metropolitan University
Dept/School/Faculty:
School of Science & Environment
PhD Supervisor:
Dr E O’Reilly (e.oreilly@mmu.ac.uk)

PROJECT SUMMARY:

Excellent candidates, who are highly motivated and keen to work on an ambitious 3 year research project are sought. The project will explore the use of ω-transaminase (ω-TA) biocatalysts for the sustainable synthesis of chiral amines including active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and bioactive natural products. Specifically, the project will involve applying innovative technology to allow these reactions to be preformed on an industrial scale. The student will also employ a recently developed high-throughput assay to facilitate the process of engineering novel ω-TA biocatalysts using directed evolution.

TRAINING

The successful candidate will gain excellent training in organic chemistry, biocatalysis and molecular biology while working in a multidisciplinary environment and benefit from close collaboration with a large team of chemical biologists and organic chemists in the MIB. In addition, there will be the opportunity to work closely with industrial collaborators from the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors which have expressed a strong interest in this technology.

BENEFITS TO THE STUDENT

- The successful applicant will benefit from the excellent research facilities at Manchester Metropolitan University and will also have the opportunity to work closely with researchers at The University of Manchester (MIB)
- The industrial interest surrounding the project will give the student the opportunity to work with leading pharmaceutical and fine chemical companies
- The student will directly contribute towards high-impact publications, patents and will have the opportunity to get involved in the commercialisation of newly developed technology
- The successful candidate will receive excellent training in organic synthesis, molecular biology, biocatalysis etc which represent highly relevant skills for a career in the pharmaceutical industry and related sectors

SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS FOR THE PROJECT:

Applicants should be in possession of, or expect to attain, a first or upper second class honours degree, or equivalent, in Chemistry or a relevant discipline.

STUDENT ELIGIBILITY: Studentship only available for European/UK students.
